I’ve had a few different colours but the light blue one actually kind of smells like sweet blueberries so it’s a favourite, I haven’t noticed a strong sent to the other colours and we’ve had red and dark blue a few times as well.
We usually keep one newer version indoors and an older one outside. When the outdoor one wears out, it gets replaced by the indoor — Parker-approved rotation. Often times there may even be 3 in use at the same time because i tend to cut the rope out anytime the threads start to look loose so that they can’t be accidentally swallowed, but the ball usually gets at least another few months of use without the rope too.

Jolly Ball Comfort & Playability: 4.8 / 5
This toy isn’t soft — but it is FUN. Parker loves shaking, tugging, chasing, and even cuddling with it. The rope is long enough to play tug without getting too close to the drool zone (a win for humans). It also makes it extra easy to play tug with your hands a safe distance from teeth, or fetch with a dog that isn’t always great at giving the toy back for another throw. Teaching him to drop it for the next round was much easier with this version that has the rope build into it than it was with previous balls where there was nothing to easily pick it up by after.
He even brings it to the trampoline to hang out or uses it as a pillow on the couch, it’s probably the most versatile and multi-use toy that he’s ever had!
Durability & Outdoor Use: 4.5 / 5
The Romp-n-Roll holds up well, but Parker does eventually destroy the ball after months of heavy use. When that happens, we toss the portion that is getting worn first (usually the rope as it starts to frey), and keep using the rest for another couple months while introducing a new one. Often more than one dog wants to be playing anyways so the downgraded version still gets lots of use for a couple extra months.
If left out in the rain, the rope gets soggy — Parker doesn’t care, but I do. Letting it dry in the sun brings it right back to use but we often only play fetch with the version that no longer has a rope if it’s been particularly wet or mucky out recently.
Is the Jolly Ball on a Rope Worth It?
In short: yes. Parker’s been playing with this toy since he was a puppy, and it’s still his favourite.
We use it for:
- Fetch
- Tug-of-war
- Training rewards
- Indoor/outdoor fun
- Napping Buddy (doesn’t look very comfortable to me but he seems to think it’s great for a cuddle)
It’s one of very few toys I consistently repurchase as it wears out overtime— and that’s saying a lot.
